SUMMARY:Musical Tribute for 9/11
DESCRIPTION:The Allen Community Band honors the 25 th anniversary of the 9-
11 attack on our nation with a musical tribute with a free concert at 7:30
  p.m. Friday\, September 11\, at the Allen Public Library\, 300 N. Allen D
 r. The program will offer a combination of patriotic selections and pieces
written specifically for the September 11 remembrance.  In addition\, the
award-winning San Antonio Express journalist William Luther\, who was in
New York City to cover the tragedy\, will share his recollections.   \nSo
me of the notable musical selections for this day include a version of Tap
s arranged by band member Derek Molacek and performed by trumpet soloist K
evin Purcell\, the official Department of Defense version of The Star-Span
gled Banner performed by all U.S. military bands\, and songs composed as t
ributes to victims of September 11 th . \nThe latter tunes include A Hymn
for the Lost and the Living by Eric Ewazen and Voices Echo \, a two-piece
movement by Benjamin Boone. The former\, featuring trumpet soloist Stepha
nie Waterman\, is a highly expressive work for wind ensembles that opens w
ith a moving trumpet solo and builds into a profound memorial. The latter
is a two-movement piece that begins with the aggressive and asymmetrical
“Attack\,” followed by “Aftermath” that provides a somber\, reflective sp
 ace.
\nAnother highlight of the band’s performance will be Carmen Dragon’
s highly emotional arrangement of America the Beautiful . One of the most
dramatic versions of this patriotic standard ever written\, it opens with
the full ensemble followed by an extended section featuring the woodwinds
\, with brass and percussion added to build to an exciting and dynamic end
ing. \nCall 214-509-4911 for additional information.\nAllen Public Library

  2 in G minor\, Op. 63 \n    William Hagen\, violin \n Brahms: Symphony No
 . 2 in D Major\, Op. 73 \n   The season opens with spirit\, warmth\, and s
weeping lyricism. Weber’s Overture to Euryanthe launches the evening with
operatic drama and sparkling orchestral color. Prokofiev’s Violin Concert
o No. 2 follows – a work of striking contrasts\, weaving together moments
of haunting introspection and sharp-edged rhythmic vitality\, highlightin
g the soloist’s expressive range. The concert concludes with Brahms’ Symph
ony No. 2\, a sunlit masterpiece overflowing with serene beauty\, rich har
monies\, and expansive joy.\nCharles W. Eisemann Center for the Performing
